How to use the Classic Curves Ruler – Does this Notion REALLY Work?

Does this Notion REALLY work? Classic Curves Ruler! Have you ever tried to make a nice curve around napkins, quilts or even try to make the quilt block, Drunkards path? Some people grab a dinner plate from the kitchen or the top of a Cool Whip container. Some just wing it and others use the Classic Curves Ruler designed by Sharon McConnell of Color Girl Quilts. Let’s take a closer look at this amazing notion.

What is the Classic Curves Ruler?

This ruler is an 11″ square acrylic ruler. There are 10 cutting grooves which means you can cut all your favorite curved piecing shapes in ten sizes. The smallest makes a 3-1/2″ finish block, like a drunkards path, and the largest is an 8″ finished block. It comes with a beautiful, full color set of instructions!

Who invented it

This ruler was invented by Sharon McConnell of Color Girl Quilts. Read all about her on her blog, www.ColorGirlQuilts.com

What inspires you? I’m sketching new designs an What inspires you?

I’m sketching new designs and realizing that I’m inspired by so much. Nature, architecture, color, thread, fabric, and life in general.

One of my favorite things to do is sketch. You can almost always find me with a mechanical pencil and sketch book or notepad. Even though I have apps for drawing, I still like to do it with pencil and paper, call me old fashion.

Where do you find inspiration?

How do you store fabric? About six months ago we How do you store fabric?

About six months ago we redesigned my sewing studio which also happens to be our dining room (seen from the living room and kitchen).

2021 for me has been more focused on garment making then ever before and so it seemed fitting to pick up a garment rack.

The garment rack we found was this beautiful rusty antique brown romantic finish and we got some nice chestnut brown hangers to match my sewing room furniture.

As I collect garment fabric I hang each piece on a hanger. It looks so pretty and has become apart of the rooms decoration. Plus it makes selecting fabric as I need it so much easier than digging through drawers. Problem is now that I need more hangers, as you can see!!

All my quilt cotton and other materials are in drawers in my bedroom but I’m in love with how I hang these. It’s very inspiring. One day I’d like to replace these “fabrics” with “garments”. It will happen, slowly but surely.

I’m so in love with this blouse and how feminine I feel and with a pair of tore up jeans and wedge sandals it goes from heirloom to trendy.

My husband bought me this beautiful blouse but it was huge in the midsection. Isn’t that the best part of being able to sew?! We can FIX things.

I added some pin tucks, took it in on the sides and added a couple of darts and now I love the fit!!

Blouse makeover! The original blouse (see the las Blouse makeover!

The original blouse (see the last photo - I forgot to take a standing up “before” -sorry) I really loved it. My husband bought it for me right after the pandemic hit but within a couple washes it had shrunk in length so bad that every time I’d wear it, I’d tug on the front to keep it in place. It wasn’t exactly comfortable. Obviously they didn’t prewash the fabric.

*️⃣That’s a huge bonus is making your own clothing!!

So, today I decided enough was enough and I cut in to it for a makeover!

Here’s what I did:

1️⃣ Cut off under the bust
2️⃣ Add similar material in cream to the bottom
3️⃣ Add side panels from the original length
4️⃣ Add a blanket stitch from my @bernetteusa along each side of the panel
5️⃣ Add some cream to the cuffs tying the two fabrics together
6️⃣ Used the last bit of scraps to make a headband

I’m so happy I didn’t just donate it or toss it. I love the fabric so much and now I’ve got a truly one-of-a-kind blouse.

What do you think? Have you done a makeover on a blouse or garment?
