My dear friend Annie Unrein from ByAnnie.com told me she was setting up a sewing blog hop with other friends and designers for the month of October. Designers would be offering free tips, tricks, projects and designs and that 30% of profits on all SewPINK items sold at ByAnnie.com would be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. I offered to join in on the fun and came up with this great little Serge-Broidery® Zipper Bag project. I hope you enjoy and go over to Annie’s website to support the cause.

- Quilter’s Cut n Press
Step 1: Pressing
Press the Shape Flex to the wrong side of the Right Front. Watch the video on the Quilter’s Cut n Press HERE.
Step 2: hooping
Hoop two layers of tear away light. Use Hoop Mat to help hoop stabilizers.
Find center of Front Right piece by folding in quarters. Place center over center of hoop. Use Hoop Mat to help align. Note: see the lines of the Hoop Mat showing through the stabilizer. Watch a video here on how to use the Hoop Mat by DIME.
Step 3: Embroidery
Choose design (4″x4″ size was used). Use basting stitch to hold materials in place.
Embroider design. I used the DIME Silver metallic thread for the swirls and light pink embroidery thread for the ribbon. Change the needle according to the thread, i.e. Metallic needle for Metallic thread and Top Stitch needle for embroidery thread.
Remove hoop from machine and remove basting stitch and extra stabilizer. Note: Tear away stabilizer careful not to distort stitching.
Press wrong side of embroidery using medium temp.
Step 4: Flatlock front seam
Set up serger for a 2 Thread Wide Flatlock stitch. Use decorative thread (i.e. Pearl Crown rayon) in lower looper and standard thread (white) in left needle. Use standar foot. Width 6.5, length 2.5, tensions both 2. Thread following your user manual or ask your local serger dealer.
Place front left and front right wrong sides together. Serge the Flatlock stitch along the left side with the cotton (embroidered piece) right side up.
Once seam is finished it will lay flat. You will see the decorative seam emerge. It’s lovely! Press.
Step 5: Attaching lower zipper
With clips attach the lower zipper, wrong side to the wrong side of the front.
Still using the Flatlock stitch and Zipper side facing up, serge the zipper to the front all the way. Note: I am using the BERNINA L460 standard foot and aligning the zipper teeth to the left of my foot.
Once stitching if finished, gently open the seam to reveal the pretty flatlock stitch. Press.
Step 6: Attaching Upper zipper to top/back
Same flatlock stitch and technique, attach the upper zipper to the Front Top/Back piece.
Once seam is open and flat press. Open zipper half way and use wonder clip to hold the zipper tape/teeth at the end.
Step 7: Final construction
Set up serger for basic 4 Thread overlock with four spools of matching thread (I used white), length 2.5, width 6.5, tensions (follow manual – mine were 4 on both needles and two loopers).
Fold the front Top/Back right sides together with the front aligning the sides and bottom edge. Serge around sides and bottom.
Use Fray Check to secure threads from unraveling as needed. Note: I used the Fray Check on the decorative Flatlock seams too.
Your bag is all finished!!
